As workers from the baby boomer generation near the age of retirement, employers are realizing the significance of retaining older workers, particularly in areas where their experience and expertise can’t be easily or cost-effectively replaced. Employers are not only identifying new ways to retain older workers, but are also recognizing the value in recruiting older workers who typically require less training, posses a strong work ethic and offer flexibility in their work schedule.

I am back in the office today after returning from the SHRM Conference and Exposition. Chicago was a fantastic host city and the McCormick Place was a great facility with ample space for the entire show and all the people attending.
Beyond.com stepped it up a notch at this year’s show with a large presence and new corporate branding to better communicate their value to employers and job seekers. The past few days have been filled with a lot of hard work and planning, combined with some fantastic parties (compliments to Jobbing, Hotjobs, and The Ladders!).

In first quarter 2008, there were no shifts within the top four industries for online job postings across the Beyond.com Network. Information Technology held strong in the #1 spot with 14.08% of all jobs posted to the network, while Sales & Sales Management remained #2 with 12.66%. Healthcare & Medical ranks as the #3 industry with 12.12% of online jobs, and Accounting & Finance held the #4 position with 8.02%.

Politics, and more specifically the upcoming Presidential election, has dominated the news, media and personal conversations across the country for months. And as the presidential election draws closer, discussing your favorite candidate is sure to be brought up in your conversations at work.
But, before you “shout from the hill tops” which political platform you prefer, make sure you know your audience because talking about politics is not always considered politically correct when it comes to the workplace.
According to a recent survey of 6,000 professionals conducted by Beyond.com, more than 49 percent of professionals consider it innappropriate to discuss politics at work.
