As Memorial Day approaches and we have summer on the mind, we thought we would give everyone a quick refresher on appropriate summer workplace attire.
While, every company has their own dress code and beliefs as to what is acceptable to wear in the workplace some companies are more old fashion and believe in the good old suit and tie while others are more modern and allow for a more comfortable style of dress like jeans and a t-shirt. But, even with the more relaxed dress code there are limitations as to what one can/should wear. Following these guidelines can be especially tough during the summertime when it is hot and humid and all you want to do is put on those flip flops, tank top and shorts instead of sweating in your restricting business attire.
Since the line can gray between what is acceptable vs. what is not, we recently asked almost 5,000 business professionals across the Beyond.com Network, the world’s largest network of niche career communities, what they believed the worst summer workplace offense was. It was a close poll with no category taking the majority, but the leading offence of wearing flip-flips was agreed upon by 30% of the professionals. Following flip flops, 23% believed muscle tees were the highest offense while 14% believed it was wearing low cut tops. Finally, tank tops were given 13% of the vote.
When getting dressed in the morning for work, think about what you are wearing because what you wear is seen as a direct correlation to your personality. By following these simple do’s and don’ts every morning you should never suffer the embarrassment of being underdressed at work during the hot summer months.
- Show off with color and not skin
- DON'T be too revealing with your clothing or wear all your bright clothing at once
- DO wear bright colors as the weather gets warmer
2. Keep your feet looking professional
- DO wear sandals, flats or wedges (that are comfortable)
- DON'T wear flip flops, despite the fact that you have 10 different pairs of Old Navy flip flops purchased for a dollar each, they’re only appropriate for work if you work at the beach
3. Wear outfits you can breathe in
- DO wear dresses and skirts as long as they are of appropriate length
- DON'T wear miniskirts or ultra form fitting dresses, even if you look like Joan
Harris from Mad Men, it’s not appropriate!
4. Be comfortable
- DO wear short sleeves in order to stay cool
- DON'T wear beach cover ups or tank tops. For men don’t wear muscle shirts or basketball shorts (unless you play for the NBA this is not appropriate attire)
If ever in doubt as to what is acceptable to wear in your specific workplace, look around at your superiors and boss to see what they are wearing. If you model your outfit off of theirs you will always be dressed correctly (at least we hope so).
