Beyond.com Reports More Than 48% of Industries Experienced a Quarterly Gain in Jobs in Second Quarter 2010

Beyond.com, Inc., the world’s largest network of niche career communities, today released its Second Quarter 2010 Career Trend Analysis Report, which revealed more than 48 percent of industries experienced a quarterly percentage gain in online jobs posted, signifying a healthier economy leading into the second half of the year.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the unemployment rate was unchanged in the month of July, holding at 9.5 percent. However, Beyond.com’s data indicates the job market is showing slow and steady signs of a recovery and hard-hitting sectors such as retail and travel are beginning to expand once again. 

According to the Beyond.com quarterly report, which gathers information across thousands of top-tier industry and local career sites, more than 73 percent of employers were looking for full-time employees, an increase of 12 percent from the previous quarter.  Healthcare and Medical represented the largest percentage gain in overall jobs posted (5.57 percent), followed by Sales and Sales Management with 2.24 percent.   

Jobs continued to grow into July, increasing by 1.17 percent over June.  In July, entry level positions showed the largest increase of 39 percent and Merchandising, Purchasing and Retail jobs representing the largest jump among industries with an increase of 137 percent.  Customer Service had the next largest increase (77 percent) and Travel, Hospitality and Restaurant following behind (41 percent).  This is a positive sign to see, especially since some of these industries had dropped during the previous quarter.

Consumer Confidence and Corporate Momentum Will Ultimately Determine Economic Rebound

Beyond.com recently released its Third Quarter 2009 Career Trend Analysis Report, which revealed that Healthcare and Information Technology continue to add jobs at a steady pace, while industries in the professional services sector such as Finance and Engineering are still experiencing sharp declines.  The report provides insight into the overall employment market by leveraging Beyond.com’s Network of top-tier industry, local and specialty sites. 

Healthcare & Medical remained in the top position for online jobs with 43.5 percent after experiencing exponential growth over the previous quarter and over the past 12 months.  Information Technology jumped up to the second spot with 12.86 percent.  Accounting & Finance experienced the largest percentage decline in jobs over the previous quarter (5.14 percent) causing the industry to drop to the third position.  Among other industries that took a hit over the past quarter, Engineering & Architecture experienced a 3.16 percent decline, while the Retail industry dropped by 3.12 percent.

Although it is clear that many industries are still on a rollercoaster ride, there are positive signs that the economy and job market may be stabilizing soon.  The USA Consumer Confidence Index (issued by The Conference Board) rose by 27.77 points over the past seven months to reach 53.07 in September 2009 — still a far stretch from the 30 year average of 95.06.  While consumer confidence continues to rise, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is starting to recognize an improvement in monthly job losses, with September’s job losses (263,000) accounting for just over one-third of the peak losses experienced in January 2009 (741,000).  The increased level of confidence, combined with lower monthly job losses, may motivate some Americans to start spending again, creating more demand for goods and services that will eventually lead to job creation across many key industries, critical for economic recovery.

Industry trend reports aggregated by Beyond.com reveal California, New York, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, and Georgia are strong states to settle for a career in information technology. These six states account for 55% of all information technology job postings in the Beyond.com network for 2008.

How does your industry match up?

The top industries for jobs experienced very little movement over the previous quarter, according to the Q2 2008 Beyond.com Career Trends Report. Information Technology continued to hold the #1 spot for online job postings for the sixth consecutive quarter, while Healthcare & Medical and Sales & Sales Management rounded out the top three industries. Some of the industries among the top ten came as a surprise, such as Travel & Hospitality, which is typically one of the first industries to be impacted by an economic recession.

Careers: To Switch or Not to Switch?

As with any economic uncertainty, certain industry sectors fair better than others. In Q2 2008, the Q2 2008 Beyond.com Career Trends Report found that the industries with the largest percentage decrease in jobs over the previous quarter included: Management & Business (-3.41%), Accounting & Finance (-0.91%), and Engineering & Architecture (-0.21%).

Does a Recession Proof Industry Really Exist?

According to Beyond.com, Healthcare & Medical proved to be one of the most recession proof industries in Q2 2008 by experiencing one of the largest percentage gain in jobs over the previous quarter with 0.52% and the largest percentage gain over the past 12 months with 2.15%.  This sector now holds the #2 spot for online job postings representing 12.65% of all jobs posted to the Beyond.com network.

Tourism on the Rise in Florida and Across the Country

While browsing some of the recruitment blogs yesterday, I came across an interesting post on Recruitingfly.com by Jen Carpenter titled “Tourism a Top Industry in Florida”.

I found the post to be interesting, since many of the statistics that Beyond.com reports on in their Quarterly Career Trend Analysis & Industry Outlook Reports also indicate that tourism is a top industry in Florida.

Quarter over quarter, these four industries stay on top

In first quarter 2008, there were no shifts within the top four industries for online job postings across the Beyond.com Network. Information Technology held strong in the #1 spot with 14.08% of all jobs posted to the network, while Sales & Sales Management remained #2 with 12.66%. Healthcare & Medical ranks as the #3 industry with 12.12% of online jobs, and Accounting & Finance held the #4 position with 8.02%.
